Visual epistemology for design in complex systems
We, Visual Designers are like the ancient cartographers we produce representations of the world, as we know it. Visual Design should not be imagined as a line but more as a circle: we explore our world and we represent it, and we use our representation to explore the world and to understand it.
Visualizations have mainly two functions they work as a medium for communication (or persuasion, or engagement…) and as a tool for understanding (or problem solving, planning, orienting…). Using visualization as a medium means to build a visual rhetoric out of those elements that will convey a message to the audience. Using visualization as a tool means to build a visual epistemology that help interpreting the world.
